We wanted to share a little bit about the incredible time we’ve had creating almost 600 of these Indiana signs with Warsaw’s sixth grade students and their teachers. We’ll talk more about that in a second, but would you and your kids like to create one of these fun signs? Click here to register for this family workshop.
This past week we completed our tour of creating a special art project with the sixth grade students in our community. We have had lots of questions about this partnership with our local Warsaw school system. We hope this post helps answer some of those questions!
The Warsaw school system received an art grant from the Dekko Foundation to do a special art project with the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in each of the eight elementary schools. We were hired to create and complete a fun project with the sixth grade students. It was a complete blast! We worked with almost 600 students and helped each one create a personal wood Indiana sign that they could take home and proudly display in their home. It was so fun to watch students get lost in the creative process and have FUN while creating.
We began each session talking a bit about art, wood projects, and our hometown of Warsaw. We then led the students through three steps to complete their own sign.
We had a variety of samples created and we talked through colors and the purpose of sanding/staining and watched as our eager artists got excited about taking these steps and creating a piece that is personal to him/her.
We saw so many different designs. It was so fun to be with so many students doing the exact same project and see new designs still emerge. Creativity is so amazing. Students wanted to do a second sign and said it was the best project they did all year. We were encouraged to hear teachers excited to see their students excited.
In order to move on from painting the sign, the students’ signs had to be completely dry. We used a blow dryer to help speed the process up. This was a fun moment to give us a minute with each student to ask about his/her sign and connect.
We had so much fun with this small wood project. It was so fun to be able to tell students that if they enjoyed this small project, maybe someday they might have a profession that creates and sells wood projects for a living!
Have you been following the pictures of us going into the schools to create with the sixth grade students? We are ready to park our art cart in the studio and have you create with us! If you have seen the signs, and you know you or someone in your family would enjoy this art project, we have an opportunity for you! We have a family workshop on our calendar! You can sign now ages 4+ for this workshop! We can’t wait to see what kind of sign you create!
Thank you to the Warsaw Community Schools for entrusting us with your sixth grade and the Dekko Foundation for making it possible for us to create with so many students!
